Kia's new 'Opposite United' is a design philosophy
The Kia EV6 was styled using the brand's new design philosophy, 'Os Posit United'. The new design language is said to be inspired by the "contradictions found in nature and humanity" and will be used to give style to future Kia models. The aim of the design philosophy is to create a new visual identity using “sharp stylistic elements and contrasting combinations of sculptural shapes”. Kia's new ‘Os Posit United’ design language is based on five main design pillars: ‘Bold for Nature’, ‘Reason for Happiness’, ‘Power to Progress’, ‘Technology for Life’, and ‘Stress for Peace’.
Being a relatively ‘young’ brand with a relatively less history than other mainstream manufacturers also enables Kia to follow a new design direction, giving designers more creative freedom. Commenting on the matter, Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of the Global Design Center, said: And a vision of what design can and should do for a brand. If I start with the aspect of the brand, we are changing the values of the brand in every aspect, re-creating the brand, redefining it. So that it gives us strong creative freedom. For another aspect, the role of design in the company, Kia, emphasizes the influence of design not only on the budget, but also on the brand as a whole. So yes, it’s probably independent of history, it’s an aspect of the brand that really allows us that creativity.
Kia EV6: Exterior styling
Talking about the design of the EV6, Habib said, "With the EV6, we aim to create a distinctive, effective design using sophisticated, high-tech features at refined and rich volumes while providing a unique space as a future EV."
Next, the EV6 gets a clamshell bonnet with Kia's new logo and wide, angular headlights attached to a slim front grille. The headlights are striking LED daytime running lights that called for the creation of the car's 'Digital Tiger Face', a development of Kia's signature 'Tiger Nose Grill' for the electrified era. Down on the front bumper is an air intake that transmits channels for maximum road dynamics under the car. The Kia EV6 has a swept-back windshield and a rear-facing C-pillar with a wide rear, giving it a crossover orientation. The EV6 has a wheel around the well and a special character line that runs under the door and turns near the rear wheels. On the back, the Kia EV6 sports unique taillights that expand the width of the boot id and tap down at the rear quarter panel. There are also two spoilers in the rear, one mounted on the ceiling and the other above the taillight.
When asked about the importance of design for EVS, Habib added, "I think the opportunities that come with EVOs are very good and very big for the design. But I want to think about where design is not just a styling opportunity, it's really an industrial design view of things or a more user-experience view of things - design not just based on what it looks like, but the way they feel, by the way, they Used, or allows an EV by ergonomics. We often talk about flat floors or thin dashboards because some components we have been able to move to the front of the car. So I think yes, our role becomes more important and our responsibility becomes a little more. "
The design of the EV6 is the result of collaborative efforts between the three studios of Kia's global design network. The studio is located in Namyang, Korea, Frankfurt, Germany and Irwin, California, USA.
Kia EV6: Interior styling
From the inside, the Kia EV6 has a slim dashboard with two large screens. There is one for the digital instrument cluster and the other screen, which is curved, is for the infotainment system. The steering wheel is brand new and features a two-spoke design with integrated buttons.
Below the infotainment screen are slim AC vents, which run along the width of the dash, and HVAC controls, which capture the haptic buttons. The center console, meanwhile, has a rotary gear selector, two cupholders, a start-stop button, and a center armrest.
The Kia EV6 also has thin, lightweight seats that are streamlined in fabrics made using recycled plastic. The Kia EV6 is said to be very experimental. “The point was actually creating a lot of legroom and creating storage in different areas that allow you to use that space,” Habib commented.
Kia EV Range: What's Coming?
The EV6 is the first of Kia's Bespoke electric cars and will see its world premiere next week. Going forward, each all-electric Kia model will adopt a number corresponding to the EV prefix and its size.
